Gut detoxes and cleanses are often marketed as a way to “reset” the digestive system, remove toxins or improve overall gut health. But does your gut actually need one?

This short video looks at how the body naturally processes and removes waste, and why good digestive health is less about “detoxing” and more about understanding the body, recognising changes and knowing when screening may be appropriate.

Healthy lifestyle habits such as eating a balanced diet, staying active and getting enough fibre can support digestive health. However, they do not replace medical screening when screening is recommended.

Some colorectal conditions can develop without obvious symptoms in the early stages. Age, family history and other individual risk factors can therefore play an important role in determining when screening should begin.

It is also important to seek medical advice if there are persistent changes in bowel habits, blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, ongoing abdominal discomfort or other unusual digestive symptoms.

Understanding what is normal for the body, paying attention to changes and undergoing appropriate screening when needed are more meaningful steps towards maintaining long-term gut health.
